New road weather stations for Carinthia

RWIS station V52 on the A2 Süd Autobahn at exit Arnoldstein in direction Italy

On the 23rd October five new road weather information system stations (RWIS) went live in Austria’s southernmost state Carinthia. JES has built these stations for ASFINAG as general contractor with construction company SSB supporting for the excavation works.

All five RWIS stations are based on the open source weather information system openWIS developed by Austrian road operator ASFINAG. The new stations are among the first featuring the newest openWIS release 2.1.

All electrical works from building the required cabinets over installation and cabling on site and commissioning have been performed by JES staff. The Carinthian construction company SSB performed the excavation works and set the concrete foundations for the poles.

The RWIS stations are connected to the early ice warning network of ASFINAG and provide valuable data for the winter operations at the following locations:

  • A2 Bridge V52 (Exit Arnoldstein)
  • A2 at km 37.075 (Schütt)
  • A11 at km 6.700
  • A10 Bridge D14 over the Drau river
  • A10 Bridge L38 near Trebesing

The new RWIS stations monitor:

  • Air temperature and relative humidity
  • Precipitation type and intensity
  • Road surface temperature
  • Freezing temperatur
  • Road condition

With the commissioning of the Carinthian RWIS stations already 12 JES openWIS stations are in operation along Austrian motorways.
